Elkin High School - Graduation Project Outcomes

The North Carolina Graduation Project is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary performance assessment completed over time.

  • The Graduation Project provides students the opportunity to connect content knowledge, acquired skills, and work habits to real world situations and issues. 
  • Through the graduation project process, students will engage various specific skills that include: computer knowledge, employability skills, information-retrieval skills, language skills – reading, language skills – writing, teamwork, and thinking/problem-solving skills. 
  • The Graduation Project consisting of four components (a research paper, product, portfolio, and an oral presentation) culminates in a student's final year of high school.
  • Student engagement in the graduation project process and the completion of the graduation project demonstrates the integration of knowledge, skills, and performance. 

Through completing the Graduation Project, students will be engaged and grow in their learning as they apply and synthesize cross-curricular skills, employ appropriate and available technology and demonstrate their readiness for 21st-century pursuits.  

Research Paper: Students will demonstrate proficiency by:

  • Evaluating resource credibility and reliability 
  • Synthesizing and organizing information into a coherent composition 
  • Using MLA format and documentation with an emphasis on incorporating appropriately cited illustrations
  • Discerning and correcting errors in their own work 

Product: Students will broaden their learning beyond the physical classroom by:

  • Demonstrating independence, responsibility and time management 
  • Locating and utilizing resources and overcoming possible obstacles 
  • Synthesizing classroom knowledge and project research in a concrete application 
  • Creating products/participating in service that engage them and connects to real-world situations 

Portfolio: Students will demonstrate pride in their work and provide evidence of their learning by:

  • Constructing a neat, clear and organized record that can be viewed by the public 
  • Reflecting on the overall process and how it has allowed them to grow 
  • Creating work-related documents (such as résumé and application) 
  • Utilizing available technology to enhance the appearance of this record 

Presentation: Students will inform a public audience about the process of their Graduation Project by:

  • Preparing an engaging, organized, and logical presentation that summarizes key events and points of the process 
  • Employing effective communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) and a variety of appropriate media 
  • Expressing an evaluation of how challenges have allowed them to grow through the experience 
  • Adopting a professional appearance and demeanor during interaction with judges and in extemporaneous responses
